Chapter 28
Signs of twenty eight
K'Lyrn was pleased the human had learned the truth. Now he was ready to aid the human in the fight against the undead. He had a force of sixty five brothers of the claw. They would not attack the humans as long as K'Lyrn remained in control of the group.
The human, Freeman, ordered his troops to pack up the camp and get ready to march. K'Lyrn moved his claw brothers away from the humans. The humans seemed to not like the proximity of the large brothers. Freeman came to talk to him.
“Okay, I know what we have to do in order to win. To completely win. To destroy this undead threat.” he stared down at K'Lyrn. “I don't have to like working with you though.”
“I never said you would like the truth” he told Freeman, “I only told you that you needed to know the truth to defeat the undead threat.“
When Freeman had his men ready they moved south towards the boundary to the human lands. K'Lyrn got the claw brothers moving to the south as well. He knew the claw brothers were much stronger than the humans, as well as, much faster. He kept them moving at a pace that would not tire the humans.
K'Lyrn tried to speak with Freeman several times but all he ever got was a report that the humans would do their part to defeat the undead. When the humans started to set up camp for the night K'Lyrn got the claw brothers ready to really move. He tried one last time to speak to Freeman. Freeman just waved him off. K'Lyrn felt badly that Freeman took the truth so harshly.
The brothers of the claw started to jog towards the boundary to the human lands. The human camp was soon left far behind. The claw brothers moved quickly loping through the plains. K'Lyrn was not surprised when the boundary was reached before dawn. The claw brothers went through the boundary swiftly. K'Lyrn still did not fully understand why the brothers of the claw did not suffer the effects of crossing the boundary. It took him considerably longer to cross.
Once the entire group was into the human lands a quick camp was set up. The claw brothers simply dropped to the ground and slept. K'Lyrn sat for a while watching the claw brothers. As he curled up and went to sleep, he hoped that the humans were going to be able to defeat the undead. He knew that the Claw brothers he lead were a diversion at best. Gaining time for the humans to do what they needed to do.
It was early after dawn when K'Lyrn was lifted from where he slept by the brothers of the claw. They continued to run to the south as K'Lyrn slept, carried along by the larger creatures. About midmorning K'Lyrn was set down and he started to travel on his own.
They traveled south for the entire day. The claw brothers moved very fast and several times during the day K'Lyrn found himself being carried. They had to catch the undead army that was scouring the south and keep it occupied while the humans lead by battle leader Freeman finished the undead threat for ever.
It was dawn the next morning when the claw brothers stopped to rest again. K'Lyrn again curled up and slept. He awoke again in the massive arms of one of the brothers of the claw. Today they would find the undead forces. They would need to hold the undead for a week to give Freeman and his force a chance at success.
K'Lyrn started to see signs of the passage of the undead army. Massive swaths of farmland would be disturbed by a force that big marching. The claw brothers followed the path and hope to overtake the slower undead before the end of that day. K'Lyrn was ready to do his part it was just a matter of catching the undead and inflicting as much damage as possible.
Just before sun set the claw brothers caught the undead. It was a fairly large group of undead but it was not the main undead force. It was perhaps one hundred and fifty to two hundred undead beasts. K'Lyrn set the claw brothers into action.
The massive beasts attacked the undead and started tearing the undead apart. The massive claw brothers did spectacular damaage to the undead. They bellowed and growled as they tore the undead to pieces. The undead also did damage to the claw brothers. The undead struck back at the claw brothers, but the claw brothers kept moving to avoid the slower undead. If the undead managed to slow down the then they were able to do significant damage.
A large group of the undead managed to drag down a few of the claw brothers and kill them. As the fight continued the claw brothers started to slow making it easier for the undead to do damage to them. K'Lyrn watched as the last of the undead was destroyed.
The undead did do damage to the claw brothers. Deep gouges were cut into the massive arms of the claw brothers. A few of the claw brothers were dragged down ad killed by the undead.
It did not take long for the battle to be decided. The bellows of the claw brothers subsided as the last of the undead were destroyed. Now it was time for K'Lyrn to do his part. He went from place to place visiting every Claw brother and tending to their wounds. The undead had done considerable damage to many of the brothers. The three that had fallen were torn apart by the brothers to prevent them from bieng taken by the undead and used as a weapon against the group.
The claw brothers ate some of the undead and then rested. K'Lyrn also rested. Healing all the claw brothers had taken a lot of effort. He was surprised how much damage the undead humans could inflict on a claw brother. Usually a human without a weapon would not stand a chance against a brother of the claw, but an undead creature could do considerable damage to a claw brother with just the nails and teeth.
After only a few hours of rest the claw brothers were ready to start hunting undead again.
K'Lyrn figured that they would start drawing attention to themselves very soon. The size of the undead force they just destroyed was about the largest group they wanted to attack. Larger groups would have to be attacked using a guerrilla tactic.
They quickly fond another group. This group was very small, no more than twenty. The brothers of the claw quickly tore into the monsters. The sound of the undead being ripped apart was drowned out by the yells of the massive claw brothers.
Again K'Lyrn visited each claw brother checking each wound that they had received. K'Lyrn had to be sure that the undead did not inflict any serious wounds on the claw brothers that would eventually kill the creature. The effect the undead had on the claw brothers was something that K'Lyrn did not fully understand. Anymore than he understood why they could cross the barrier dividing his own lands from the human lands without the painful effect he and the humans suffered.
He got the claw brothers moving and had them retreat and find a spot for them all to rest. He was almost to the point of exhausting himself. He did not want to have the claw brothers wounded and not be able to heal them.
The brothers of the claw quickly found a spot a collapsed into sleep. K'Lyrn also slept waiting for the next day to come to continue hunting the undead.
