Chapter 29
Signs of twenty nine
the brothers of the claw continued to hunt the undead the next day. K'Lyrn continued to heal the claw brothers whenever they were hurt. The pattern started to become routine.
The claw brothers would find a group of undead. The massive claw brothers would run into the undead bellowing their rage. The undead would silently strike back at the claw brothers. The claw brothers would crush the undead, pick them up and literally tear them apart. The sounds of he battle would echo around the battlefield. The undead were always silent. The sound of the snapping bones of the undead mixed with the yells and screams of the brothers of the claw. It would take only minutes. The brothers of the claw would not attack a group too large for them to destroy in a short battle.
The undead were starting to learn better tactics against the claw brothers. They would concentrate their attacks on a single claw brother bringing him down. The undead would then move to another brother of the claw. K'Lyrn was a little concerned that they would be weakened by these tactics before they faced the main undead force.
K'Lyrn would keep out of the battle waiting until it was settled to heal the wounded. The undead did considerable damage to the claw brothers. After each battle K'Lyrn would see claw brothers with deep rents torn in their arms, legs, chest, anywhere the undead could reach. He would carefully clean each wound. The brothers of the claw would sit calmly through the process. He knew that the processes was painful but they each just sat and took the treatment, allowed K'Lyrn to scour their body for wounds.
Once the wounds were cleaned K'Lyrn would then draw on the power of the earth. He had a constant link to the power of the earth. The old power would build within him and he would feel a growing heat within himself. The temptation to hold this power was great but he knew the dangers of that path. He would release that power into the claw brothers. Willing the wounds to heal, the power K'Lyrn put into the brothers of the claw would accelerate the healing process. Once that was finished K'Lyrn would move on to the next claw brother.
This would be repeated for every brother of the claw after each conflict. K'Lyrn could heal them all perhaps a dozen times before he would have to rest. He found himself being carried more and more and the claw brothers ranged farther and farther to find undead forces.
It was a dusk of the third day that they found the main force of undead. It was a massive force, approaching two thousand creatures. K'Lyrn Looked at the opposing force and wondered if his fifty eight claw brothers would be able to slow down this force. The undead could swallow this force without much effort. The worst news was that the undead force was heading north. They were already heading back towards Freemans attack group. If K'Lyrn was to buy Freeman the time he needed he would have to get this group to slowdown.
The undead had already seen the claw brothers and large force was breaking off to attack the group. K'Lyrn waited to see if the rest of the group would be following the smaller attack force sent against the brothers of the claw. They continued to march north. The tread of their feet thundered as they stomped off to fight Freeman.
The brothers of the claw turned and fled to the south. Drawing the three hundred strong attack group of undead after them. The claw brothers ran south for about a hour. They stopped at regular intervals to make sure that the undead still followed them. K'Lyrn knew they had to change tactics if they were to defeat or even slow down the massive undead force marching to the north.
The brothers of the claw split, half continuing to head south. The other half moved off to the west to circle around and hit the undead force following them from the flank. K'Lyrn stayed with the group heading south. They made a tremendous amount of noise to make sure the undead knew where they were and to cover the sounds of the other claw brothers.
They also slowed down wanting the undead to catch them. It took less than ten minutes for the undead to catch them. They turned and readied themselves for the undead attack. Just as the undead were set to attack the second group of claw brothers struck. They slammed into the undefended flank of the undead forces. They picked up the undead from the outer ranks and smashed them into the bulk of the undead force. The claw brothers cried in victory as their undead missiles smashed into the ranks of the undead creatures.
The falling undead did massive damage when they fell from the sky. The sounds of bodies breaking filled the air. The claw brothers launched three volleys and then fled. The undead surged forward but the claw brothers were too fast. The simple tactic had taken an hour but had destroyed a at least fifty of the undead. While they ran the claw brothers passed K'Lyrn form brother to brother. Amazingly only one claw brother had sustained a wound and it was a minor one. The claw brothers turned form their southern path and quickly reversed to the north. They took the opportunity to rest and K'Lyrn healed the wounded brother. When the undead neared thir current location the claw brothers. Struck again from the flank. Again unleashing clawing undead missiles into the massed creatures. The effect was the same the undead took severe losses without any serious injuries on the claw brothers.
The brothers of the claw fled back north following the same path they had taken south the undead quickly fell behind. At the site of their forst attack on the undead the claw brothers stopped. They each picked up an undead body from the ground and waited for the undead force. It had been two hours and they had reduced the undead force by a full third without losing a single brother of the claw.
When the undead force returned they pushed forward towards the claw brothers. The claw brothers launch the final volley of bodies sending them crashing into the advancing undead. The effect was the same as the bodies crushed those they landed on snapping arms, legs and necks. Then the undead were upon them. The claw brothers contnued to use the undead as weapons. Grabbing undead and swinging them like clubs. The effect was remarkable. The entire undead force was dispatched without losing a single claw brother.
K'Lyrn quickly treated each claw brother. The battle had gone far better than K'Lyrn would have guessed but they had a lot more undead to hunt before they could return to there homelands.
As soon as they were all healed they picked up a dead body each and started running back north looking for the main undead force. K'Lyrn heard the heavy breathing of the claw brothers. Running south for an hour and then fighting a force three time there size had taken toll on the group but they could not rest. As long as the undead were ahead of them resting just gave the undead a further head start.
The claw brothers pushed themselves far beyond the usual limits of even their endurance. They heard the undead before they saw them. But beofre long they saw the rear of the massive undead force. The brothers of the claw gave a final burst of speed and launched the dead bodies they carried into the rear guard. The effect was just what K'Lyrn would have expected. The bodies rained into the rear guard causing massive damage where they fell. The rear guard broke off and started to advance on the claw brothers. They stood for a moment, waiting until the undead were almost on top of them and then they screamed battle cries and charged through the advancing undead.
The massive claw brothers did unbelievable damage with the charge. The undead rear guard was devastated. The remnants of the rear guard regrouped and counter attacked separating three of the claw brothers from the rest. The three claw brothers fought like they were possessed. All about them the shattered remains of undead creatures piled up. The rest of the brothers of the claw took the opportunity to flee. K'Lyrn watched for as long as he could as the three claw brothers were slowly over come.
K'Lyrn was pleased with the attack. He guessed they had destroyed nearly five hundred of the undead and lost only three. If only they could keep up that pace.
The brothers of the claw ran as fast as they could to the north until they were far ahead of the undead. Then they stopped. K'Lyrn went through the group again. Cleaning wounds and healing the claw brothers. Then they all slept getting ready for the carnage that would come tomorrow.
